Part (a) · 2 marks
Show, by working, that dividing 3/8 by 27/32 equals 4/9.
- 1Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal, so invert 27/32 and multiply.
- 23/8 ÷ 27/32 = 3/8 × 32/27
- 33/8 × 32/27 = (3 × 32)/(8 × 27) = 96/216
- 496/216 = 4/9, since 96 ÷ 24 = 4 and 216 ÷ 24 = 9
- 5So 3/8 ÷ 27/32 = 4/9
Answer3/8 ÷ 27/32 = 3/8 × 32/27 = 96/216 = 4/9
Part (b) · 2 marks
Show, by working, that 5/6 minus 3/8 equals 11/24.
- 1The lowest common denominator of 6 and 8 is 24.
- 25/6 = 20/24 and 3/8 = 9/24
- 320/24 − 9/24 = 11/24
- 4So 5/6 − 3/8 = 11/24
Answer5/6 − 3/8 = 20/24 − 9/24 = 11/24
