The question, in short

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 4 marks
- 1Let the number of Lower Sixth students be L and Upper Sixth be U.
- 2We know that L + U = 380 and U = L − 20.
- 3Substitute U into the first equation: L + (L − 20) = 380
- 42L − 20 = 380
- 52L = 400
- 6L = 200
- 7Then U = 200 − 20 = 180
- 8Number of Upper Sixth studying Maths: (2/5) × 180 = 72
- 9Number of Lower Sixth studying Maths: 32% of 200 = 0.32 × 200 = 64
- 10Total studying Maths: 72 + 64 = 136
