The question, in short
Solve the simultaneous equations 5x + 4y = −2 and 2x − y = 4.4, showing clear algebraic working.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 3 marks
- 1Multiply the second equation by 4: 8x − 4y = 17.6
- 2Add to the first equation: 5x + 4y + 8x − 4y = −2 + 17.6
- 313x = 15.6
- 4x = 15.6 / 13 = 1.2
- 5Substitute x = 1.2 into 2x − y = 4.4: 2(1.2) − y = 4.4
- 62.4 − y = 4.4
- 7−y = 2
- 8y = −2
Answerx = 1.2, y = −2
