The question, in short

Given the arithmetic sequence 6, 10, 14, 18, work out a formula for the nth term and then for the term at position n + 1.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Using the four listed terms, determine a formula involving n that produces the value at position n.

  1. 110 − 6 = 4, so common difference is 4
  2. 2First term is 6, so nth term = 4n + k
  3. 3When n = 1, 4(1) + k = 6, so k = 2
  4. 44n + 2

Answer4n + 2

Part (b) · 1 mark

State a formula involving n that gives the value one place after the nth term.

  1. 1(n + 1)th term = 4(n + 1) + 2
  2. 24n + 4 + 2 = 4n + 6

Answer4n + 6
