The question, in short

Using Tenzin's two mountain rules, estimate a temperature at 2000 m given 6 °C at 800 m, and estimate walking time for 12 km with 800 m climb, in hours and minutes.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 3 marks

Apply the 2 °C drop per 300 m rule from 800 m at 6 °C to estimate the temperature at 2000 m.

  1. 1Height increase = 2000 − 800 = 1200 m
  2. 21200 ÷ 300 = 4 lots of 300 m, so the drop is 4 × 2 = 8 °C
  3. 3Temperature = 6 − 8 = −2

Answer−2

Part (b) · 3 marks

Combine 5 km/h walking speed for 12 km with 1 minute per 10 m of the 800 m climb; give hours and minutes.

  1. 1Walking time = 12 ÷ 5 = 2.4 hours = 144 minutes
  2. 2Height time = 800 ÷ 10 = 80 minutes
  3. 3Total = 144 + 80 = 224 minutes = 3 hr 44 min

Answer3 hr 44 min or 3:44
