The question, in short

Expand and simplify the product of three linear brackets, then rearrange a formula to make m the subject.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 3 marks

Expand and simplify (x + 2)(2x + 3)(x − 7), showing working clearly.

  1. 1(2x + 3)(x − 7) = 2x² − 14x + 3x − 21
  2. 22x² − 11x − 21
  3. 3(2x² − 11x − 21)(x + 2) = 2x³ + 4x² − 11x² − 22x − 21x − 42
  4. 42x³ − 7x² − 43x − 42

Answer2x³ − 7x² − 43x − 42

Part (b) · 3 marks

Rearrange p² = (x + m)/(2m − y) to make m the subject.

  1. 1p²(2m − y) = x + m
  2. 22p²m − p²y = x + m
  3. 32p²m − m = x + p²y
  4. 4m(2p² − 1) = x + p²y
  5. 5m = (x + p²y)/(2p² − 1)

Answerm = (x + p²y)/(2p² − 1)
