The question, in short

Solve the simultaneous equations x + 2y = −0.5 and 3x − y = 16, showing clear algebraic working.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1Multiply 3x − y = 16 by 2: 6x − 2y = 32
  2. 2Add to x + 2y = −0.5: 7x = 31.5, so x = 4.5
  3. 34.5 + 2y = −0.5, so 2y = −5
  4. 4x = 4.5, y = −2.5

Answerx = 4.5, y = −2.5
