The question, in short

Using the table of the first six terms written as products divided by 2, prove algebraically that adding any two consecutive terms always gives a square number.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 1Term n = 1/2 n(n+1)
  2. 2Term n+1 = 1/2 (n+1)(n+2)
  3. 3Sum = 1/2 n(n+1) + 1/2 (n+1)(n+2)
  4. 4Factor out 1/2 (n+1): 1/2 (n+1)(n + n+2)
  5. 5Simplify: 1/2 (n+1)(2n+2)
  6. 6Factor 2: 1/2 (n+1) * 2(n+1) = (n+1)²

Answer(n + 1)²
