Part (a) · 3 marks
Use the table values to find a formula expressing y in terms of x, given inverse square proportionality.
- 1Inversely proportional to x²: y = k/x²
- 2Use x = 1.5, y = 16: k = 16 × 1.5² = 16 × 2.25 = 36
- 3y = 36/x²
Answery = 36/x²
Part (b) · 2 marks
Using y = 36/x², determine the positive value of x that makes y equal 144.
- 1Use y = 36/x² with y = 144
- 2x² = 36 ÷ 144 = 0.25
- 3x > 0, so x = √0.25 = 0.5
