The question, in short

Rhombus ABCD has diagonals AC and BD crossing at M(6, −11); A and C lie on 2y + 7x = 20. Find exact coordinates where line BD meets the y-axis.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 1AC: y = −7x/2 + 10, so its gradient is −7/2
  2. 2Rhombus diagonals are perpendicular: BD gradient = 2/7
  3. 3BD through M(6, −11): y + 11 = 2/7 (x − 6)
  4. 4At x = 0: y = −11 − 12/7 = −89/7
  5. 5(0, −89/7)

Answer(0, −89/7)
