Part (a) · 3 marks

Calculate the interquartile range of the eleven listed January test scores, showing all working clearly.

  1. 1Order the 11 results: 35, 37, 38, 39, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 47, 47
  2. 2Lower quartile is the (11 + 1) ÷ 4 = 3rd value: 38
  3. 3Upper quartile is the 3 × (11 + 1) ÷ 4 = 9th value: 45
  4. 4Interquartile range = 45 − 38 = 7

Answer7

Part (b) · 1 mark

Decide whether January or May results were more consistent, giving a reason based on the two interquartile ranges.

  1. 1IQR for January is 7, IQR for May is 12
  2. 2A smaller IQR means less spread and more consistency
  3. 3January has a smaller IQR than May
  4. 4So Sandeep's test results were more consistent in January
