The question, in short
Expand a product of a term and a bracket, factorise a quadratic, then use that factorisation to solve the related equation.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Expand 3c³(c + 4).
- 13c³ × c = 3c⁴
- 23c³ × 4 = 12c³
- 33c⁴ + 12c³
Answer3c⁴ + 12c³
Part (bi) · 2 marks
Factorise x² + 8x − 9.
- 1Find two numbers that multiply to −9 and add to 8: 9 and −1
- 2(x + 9)(x − 1)
Answer(x + 9)(x − 1)
Part (bii) · 1 mark
Using your factorisation, solve x² + 8x − 9 = 0.
- 1(x + 9)(x − 1) = 0
- 2x + 9 = 0 → x = −9
- 3x − 1 = 0 → x = 1
- 4−9, 1
Answer−9, 1
