The question, in short
Using a biased 4-sided spinner with P(1)=0.26, P(3)=0.18 and P(2)=P(4), find an estimate for the number of spins landing on 4 given 45 estimated landings on 3.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Solution · 4 marks
- 1The four probabilities add up to 1
- 2P(2) + P(4) = 1 − 0.26 − 0.18 = 0.56
- 3P(2) = P(4), so P(4) = 0.56 ÷ 2 = 0.28
- 4An estimate for the number of 3s is 45, and P(3) = 0.18
- 5Number of spins = 45 ÷ 0.18 = 250
- 6Estimate for the number of 4s = 250 × 0.28
- 7250 × 0.28 = 70
