Part (a) · 2 marks
Work out a formula involving n that produces the nth term of the sequence 1, 5, 9, 13, 17.
- 15 − 1 = 4
- 29 − 5 = 4
- 3common difference is 4
- 4first term is 1
- 5nth term = 4n + k
- 61 = 4(1) + k
- 7k = 1 − 4 = −3
- 8nth term = 4n − 3
Answer4n − 3
Part (b) · 1 mark
For a sequence whose nth term is 3n + 5, write the (2m)th term as an expression in m.
- 1nth term = 3n + 5
- 2replace n with 2m
- 3(2m)th term = 3(2m) + 5
- 46m + 5
Answer6m + 5
