The question, in short
Solve the simultaneous equations 3x − 5y = 25 and 4x + 3y = 14, showing clear algebraic working.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 4 marks
- 1Multiply first equation by 3: 9x − 15y = 75
- 2Multiply second equation by 5: 20x + 15y = 70
- 3Add the equations: 29x = 145
- 4x = 145 / 29 = 5
- 5Substitute x = 5 into 4x + 3y = 14: 4(5) + 3y = 14
- 620 + 3y = 14
- 73y = 14 − 20 = −6
- 8y = −6 / 3 = −2
- 9x = 5
- 10y = −2
Answerx = 5, y = −2
