The question, in short

Six integers a < b < c < d with d repeated three times have mode 9, median 8 and range 4; find a, b, c and d.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1Mode is 9, so d = 9 (it appears three times)
  2. 2Median of six numbers = (c + d) ÷ 2 = 8, so c + 9 = 16 and c = 7
  3. 3Range: d − a = 4, so a = 9 − 4 = 5
  4. 4b is between 5 and 7, so b = 6
  5. 5a = 5, b = 6, c = 7, d = 9

Answera = 5, b = 6, c = 7, d = 9
