Part (i) · 2 marks
Factorise x² + 5x − 24 into two brackets.
- 1Find two numbers that multiply to −24 and add to 5
- 2These numbers are −3 and 8
- 3(x − 3)(x + 8)
Answer(x − 3)(x + 8)
Part (ii) · 1 mark
Using your factorisation, find the solutions of x² + 5x − 24 = 0.
- 1Set (x − 3)(x + 8) = 0
- 2x − 3 = 0 or x + 8 = 0
- 3x = 3 or x = −8
- 43, −8
