The question, in short

Solve the simultaneous equations 7x + 3y = 3 and 3x − y = 7, showing clear algebraic working.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1Multiply 3x − y = 7 by 3: 9x − 3y = 21
  2. 2Add to 7x + 3y = 3: 16x = 24, so x = 1.5
  3. 3Substitute: 3 × 1.5 − y = 7, so 4.5 − y = 7
  4. 4x = 1.5, y = −2.5

Answerx = 1.5, y = −2.5
