The question, in short

Given probabilities for Novak winning each of two tennis games depending on the first result, complete a probability tree and find the chance he wins both games.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 1 mark

Fill in the two missing probabilities on the second-game branches of the tree diagram.

  1. 1The probability of losing the second game given he won the first is 1 − 0.9 = 0.1
  2. 2The probability of winning the second game given he lost the first is already given as 0.4, so the probability of losing the second game given he lost the first is 1 − 0.4 = 0.6

Answer0.1 and 0.6

Part (b) · 2 marks

Calculate the probability that Novak wins both games.

  1. 1Probability that Novak wins both games = probability of winning first game × probability of winning second game given he won the first
  2. 20.7 × 0.9 = 0.63

Answer0.63
