The question, in short
For the curve y = x³ − 8x² − 12x + 5 with two stationary points A and B, find the coordinates of A, the one with the larger x value, showing algebraic working.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 5 marks
- 1y = x³ − 8x² − 12x + 5
- 2dy/dx = 3x² − 16x − 12
- 33x² − 16x − 12 = 0
- 4(3x + 2)(x − 6) = 0
- 5x = −2/3 or x = 6
- 6x coordinate of A is greater, so x = 6
- 7y = (6)³ − 8(6)² − 12(6) + 5
- 8y = 216 − 288 − 72 + 5
- 9y = −139
- 10(6, −139)
Answer(6, −139)
