The question, in short

Two similar vases have heights 30 cm and 12 cm, and the difference between their surface areas is 178.5 cm²; work out the surface area of the taller vase.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 1Heights 30 : 12 = 5 : 2, so surface areas are in the ratio 5² : 2² = 25 : 4
  2. 2Let area A = 25x and area B = 4x, so 25x − 4x = 21x = 178.5
  3. 3x = 178.5 ÷ 21 = 8.5
  4. 4Surface area of A = 25 × 8.5 = 212.5

Answer212.5
