The question, in short

Given f(x) = x/(2x − 4) and g(x) = 3x + 1, use fg(k) = 2 to work out the value of k.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1g(k) = 3k + 1, so fg(k) = (3k + 1) ÷ (2(3k + 1) − 4) = (3k + 1)/(6k − 2)
  2. 2Set it equal to 2: 3k + 1 = 2(6k − 2) = 12k − 4
  3. 35 = 9k, so k = 5/9
