The question, in short
Four integers in ascending order are x, x, y, 15; the median is 12.5 and the range is 4. Find x and y.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 2 marks
- 1The median of four numbers in ascending order is the average of the second and third numbers, so (x + y) / 2 = 12.5
- 2Multiply both sides by 2: x + y = 25
- 3The range is 15 − x = 4
- 4Solve for x: x = 15 − 4 = 11
- 5Substitute x = 11 into x + y = 25: 11 + y = 25
- 6Solve for y: y = 25 − 11 = 14
- 7x = 11, y = 14
Answerx = 11, y = 14
