The question, in short

Using sets ℰ = {1,...,12}, A = {2,4,6,8,10,12}, B = {3,6,9,12}, C = {1,3,5,7,9,11}, list set members and choose symbols to make statements true.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 2 marks

List the members of A ∪ B, and list the members of B′.

  1. 1(i) A ∪ B is everything in A or B or both
  2. 2= 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12
  3. 3(ii) B′ is everything in ℰ not in B
  4. 4= 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11

Answer(i) 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12 (ii) 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11

Part (b) · 2 marks

Choose a symbol from ∩, ∪, ∅, ∈, ∉ to complete A ∩ C = ... and 13 ... ℰ.

  1. 1(i) A is even numbers, C is odd numbers
  2. 2They have no members in common, so A ∩ C = ∅
  3. 3(ii) 13 is not in ℰ, so 13 ∉ ℰ

Answer(i) ∅ (ii) ∉
