The question, in short

Using 9 identical L by W tiles, Yasmin forms rectangle ABCD with area 1620 cm²; find L and W from the tile arrangement shown.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 5 marks

  1. 19 tiles make 1620 cm², so LW = 1620 ÷ 9 = 180
  2. 2Top and bottom of ABCD match: 5W = 4L, so L = 5W/4
  3. 35W/4 × W = 180, so W² = 144 and W = 12
  4. 4L = 5 × 12 ÷ 4 = 15

AnswerL = 15, W = 12
