The question, in short
Simplify a zero-index expression, factorise the quadratic x² − 5x − 36, then use that factorisation to solve x² − 5x − 36 = 0.

Part (a) · 1 mark
Simplify (3x²y)⁰.
- 1Anything (not zero) to the power 0 is 1
- 2(3x²y)⁰ = 1
Answer1
Part (bi) · 2 marks
Factorise x² − 5x − 36.
- 1Find two numbers that multiply to −36 and add to −5: 4 and −9
- 2x² − 5x − 36 = (x + 4)(x − 9)
Answer(x + 4)(x − 9)
Part (bii) · 1 mark
Using your factorisation, solve x² − 5x − 36 = 0.
- 1(x + 4)(x − 9) = 0, so x + 4 = 0 or x − 9 = 0
- 2x = −4 or x = 9
Answer−4 and 9
