Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 1(4 − √2)(a + b√2) = 10 + √2
  2. 2a + b√2 = (10 + √2)/(4 − √2)
  3. 3= (10 + √2)(4 + √2)/((4 − √2)(4 + √2)) = (42 + 14√2)/14
  4. 4= 3 + √2, so a = 3, b = 1

Answera = 3, b = 1
