WMA11/01 Jan 2019, Question 3: Perpendicular Lines

Pearson Edexcel International AS Level Mathematics · Pure Mathematics 1 (WMA11) · Calculator · 5 marks

The question, in short

For the line 3x + 5y − 7 = 0, work out its gradient, then get the equation of the perpendicular line through (6, −2) as y = mx + c.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Determine the slope of the line given by 3x + 5y − 7 = 0.

  1. 1Make y the subject: 5y = −3x + 7
  2. 2y = −(3/5)x + 7/5, so the gradient is −3/5

Answer−3/5

Part (b) · 3 marks

Find y = mx + c for the line at right angles to l₁ passing through (6, −2).

  1. 1Perpendicular gradient: m = 5/3
  2. 2Use the point (6, −2): y + 2 = (5/3)(x − 6)
  3. 3y = (5/3)x − 10 − 2 = (5/3)x − 12

Answery = (5/3)x − 12
