WMA11/01 Jan 2019, Question 4: Finding Regions from Multiple Inequalities

Pearson Edexcel International AS Level Mathematics · Pure Mathematics 1 (WMA11) · Calculator · 3 marks

The question, in short

Using the line 2y = x, the curve y = 2x − (1/8)x² and the vertical line l₂ through the positive x-axis intercept of C, state the inequalities that describe region R.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1R is below the solid line l₁: 2y ≤ x
  2. 2R is above the solid curve C: y ≥ 2x − (1/8)x²
  3. 3C meets the positive x-axis where 2x − (1/8)x² = 0, so x = 16
  4. 4R is to the left of the dashed line l₂: x < 16

Answer2y ≤ x, y ≥ 2x − (1/8)x², x < 16
