WMA11/01 Jan 2019, Question 2: Fractional Indices

Pearson Edexcel International AS Level Mathematics · Pure Mathematics 1 (WMA11) · Calculator · 3 marks

The question, in short

Using the equation 3ˣ ÷ 3⁴ʸ = 27√3, express y in terms of x in its simplest form.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1Write both sides as powers of 3: 3ˣ⁻⁴ʸ = 3³ × 3^(1/2) = 3^(7/2)
  2. 2Equate powers: x − 4y = 7/2
  3. 3Make y the subject: y = (1/4)x − 7/8

Answery = (1/4)x − 7/8
