WMA11/01 Oct 2020, Question 4: Simultaneous Equations with a Curve

Pearson Edexcel International AS Level Mathematics · Pure Mathematics 1 (WMA11) · Calculator · 7 marks

The question, in short

Solve the simultaneous equations y − 3x = 4 and x² + y² + 6x − 4y = 4 using algebra, showing every stage of working.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 7 marks

  1. 1y = 3x + 4
  2. 2x² + (3x + 4)² + 6x − 4(3x + 4) = 4
  3. 3x² + 9x² + 24x + 16 + 6x − 12x − 16 − 4 = 0, so 10x² + 18x − 4 = 0
  4. 45x² + 9x − 2 = 0, so (5x − 1)(x + 2) = 0
  5. 5x = 1/5 or x = −2
  6. 6y = 3(1/5) + 4 = 23/5; y = 3(−2) + 4 = −2

Answerx = 1/5, y = 23/5 and x = −2, y = −2
