1. What "Given That" Means

"Given that" tells you something is already known about the person or thing chosen. So you only choose from that smaller group.

Formula

B is the group you already know about. A is what you want to find inside that group.

Rule

Given that: the bottom of the fraction is the smaller group, not everyone.

Key idea

Puzzle: a prize is behind one of 3 doors. You pick one. The host, who knows where the prize is, opens another door with nothing behind it. Should you switch? Yes! Your first pick was right only of the time, so switching wins of the time.

2. Given That From a Table

The most common 1 or 2-mark question: "One of the type A phones is chosen." or "Given that the phone is 128 GB..." A shop sold 155 phones.

Phone64 GB128 GB
Type A3847
Type B2941

Worked example

  1. 1

    — “One of the type A phones” means only type A can be chosen. Add along the row: 85 phones is the new total.

  2. 2

    — 47 of those 85 type A phones are 128 GB. The group you are given goes on the bottom.

  3. 3

    — Now the question says “given 128 GB”. Add down the column: 88 phones are 128 GB.

  4. 4

    — 41 of those 88 are type B, so 88 is the bottom this time.

Common mistake

Dividing by 155. "One of the type A phones" means only the 85 type A phones can be chosen.

Key idea

Swap the group and the answer changes. Given type A, 128 GB is . Given 128 GB, type A is .

3. Given That From a Grouped Table

The 2-mark question: "Given that a shopper spent more than 24 minutes, find the probability they spent more than 36 minutes."

MinutesShoppers
6
11
13
10

Worked example

  1. 1

    — More than 24 minutes means the last two rows. Add them: 23 shoppers is the group you are given.

  2. 2

    — Inside that group, only the last row took more than 36 minutes.

  3. 3

    — The part you want over the group you are given. 10 and 23 share no factor, so it does not simplify.

Common mistake

Writing . The 17 shoppers under 24 minutes cannot be chosen, so leave them out.

4. Given That From a Venn Diagram

Exams often say “a student is picked from those who swim”. The circle you are told about is the new total.

40 students: football (F), tennis (T), swimming (S). The Venn diagram regions are:

RegionStudents
F only7
T only5
S only6
F and T only3
F and S only4
T and S only2
All three1
None12

A student is picked from those who swim. Find the probability they also play tennis.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Add every region inside the S circle, including the overlaps. These 13 swimmers are the only ones who can be picked.

  2. 2

    — Inside S, find the regions that are also in T: “T and S only” and “all three”. That is 3.

  3. 3

    — The part you want over the circle you are given.

When the Venn diagram or tree shows probabilities instead of numbers, use this.

Formula

The bar means “given”. means A and B both happen. is the probability of the thing you are told has happened.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Read the two probabilities. The day is given to be rainy, so rain is B.

  2. 2

    — Put “both” on top and the given event on the bottom.

  3. 3

    — 0.12 ÷ 0.3 = 1.2 ÷ 3 = 0.4. It is bigger than 0.12 because only rainy days count now.

Common mistake

Dividing by 40 in the swimming question. “From those who swim” means only the 13 in circle S can be picked.

5. Given That From a Sample Space

A common 2 or 3-mark question: “Given that the total is odd…”. Fill the table, cross out the cells that did not happen, then count.

Lola picks a number from 1, 2, 3, then a number from 2, 4, 5, and adds them. Given that the total is odd, find the probability that one of the numbers she picks is 2.

+123
2345
4567
5678

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Every first number goes with every second number. Each of the 9 cells is equally likely.

  2. 2

    — “Given the total is odd”: keep only the odd cells. There are 5, so 5 goes on the bottom.

  3. 3

    — Inside those 5 cells, find the ones where one of the numbers picked is a 2. There are 3.

  4. 4

    — The cells you want over the cells you are given.

Common mistake

Dividing by 9. Once you know the total is odd, the 4 even cells cannot have happened, so leave them out.

Key idea

Always write the fraction. A right bottom number, like 5 here, can score a mark even if the top is wrong.

6. Given That, Then Two Picks

The 3-mark question: two people are picked from one group, like “two of the students who like tennis”. Use only that group, and the second pick has one fewer.

A club has 30 members. 12 play chess, and 8 of those also play draughts. Two of the chess players are picked at random. Find the probability that both play draughts.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Only the 12 chess players can be picked, so 12 is the first bottom. The other 18 members do not count.

  2. 2

    — 8 of the 12 chess players also play draughts.

  3. 3

    — The same person cannot be picked twice. One draughts player is gone, so 7 are left out of 11.

  4. 4

    — Both must happen, so multiply along the path.

  5. 5

    — Divide top and bottom by 4 to simplify.

Common mistake

Using . The two people come from the 12 chess players, not the whole club.

7. Given That on a Tree

The 3-mark question: the chance of the second event depends on the first. The second branches are different after each first result.

Emma wins her first race with probability 0.6. If she wins a race, she wins the next with probability 0.7. If she loses, she wins the next with probability 0.4.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Win the first race (0.6), then win again. After a win the branch is 0.7. Multiply along the path.

  2. 2

    — Win, then lose. After a win, losing is 1 − 0.7 = 0.3, because the two branches add to 1.

  3. 3

    — Lose the first (1 − 0.6 = 0.4), then win. After a loss the branch is 0.4.

  4. 4

    — Win then lose, and lose then win, both have exactly one win. Either path will do, so add them.

Common mistake

Using 0.6 again for the second race. After a win it is 0.7, after a loss it is 0.4. Read which branch you are on.

Key idea

Three races? Same idea: multiply along each path, and each branch depends on the race before it.

8. Which Method? Read the Question

Find the group you are given. That is your new total.
