1. What Frequency Density Means
When the bars have different widths, a wide bar looks big even with few people in it. So the height is not the frequency.
Formula
Frequency is how many are in the class. Class width is the top of the class minus the bottom.
Rule
The AREA of each bar is the frequency: .
Key idea
Label the side of the graph "Frequency density", not "Frequency".
2. How Many Altogether?
The 3-mark question: the histogram has no numbers up the side, but you are told one frequency. Use it to find the scale, then read every bar.
Here 30 people waited between 5 and 15 minutes. The bars are 24, 30, 24, 16 and 3 small squares tall.
Worked example
- 1
— Start with the bar you know. Find its width (top minus bottom), because its area, not its height, is the 30 people.
- 2
— Frequency ÷ width gives this bar's frequency density. So the top of this bar stands for 3.
- 3
— This bar is 30 small squares tall. 3 ÷ 30 gives one square's value. Now the side has a scale.
- 4
— Turn each bar's squares (24, 30, 24, 16, 3) into a height by multiplying by 0.1.
- 5
— Frequency = height × width, because the area of a bar is its frequency. Width is 5 − 0 = 5.
- 6
— Same height as the first bar, but 3 times as wide (30 − 15 = 15), so 3 times as many people.
- 7
— Height × width again. Width is 40 − 30 = 10.
- 8
— A low bar, but wide (60 − 40 = 20), so it still holds 6 people.
- 9
— Add every bar, including the 30 you were told, to get the total.
Common mistake
Adding the heights (2.4 + 3 + ...). Heights are densities. Multiply each by its width first.
Key idea
Write your scale on the axis (for example 3 at the top of the 5 to 15 bar). That alone earns a method mark, even if a later line goes wrong.
3. Part of a Bar: Probability and Proportion
The 3-mark question asks how many are above (or below) a value that cuts through a bar. Take only the part of the bar you need.
Same waiting times, 100 people. How many waited more than 20 minutes?
Worked example
- 1
— 20 cuts through the 15 to 30 bar. Only the part from 20 to 30 counts, so the width is 10, not 15.
- 2
— Height × width of just that part. We assume people are spread evenly across a bar, so this is an estimate.
- 3
— The bars after 30 lie wholly above 20 minutes, so take their full frequencies.
- 4
— Add the part bar and the whole bars: 46 people waited more than 20 minutes.
- 5
— Probability (or proportion) = how many ÷ total. As a percentage this is 46%.
Common mistake
Using the whole 15 to 30 bar (36). The question starts at 20, so use width 10, not 15.
Key idea
Between two values? Cut at both ends. Between 10 and 20 minutes: from the 5 to 15 bar, plus from the 15 to 30 bar, so 27 people.
4. Drawing the Histogram
The 3-mark question gives a table. Work out a frequency density for each class, then draw bars that touch.
Plant heights: 8 plants in , 12 in , 30 in and 18 in .
Worked example
- 1
— Width is 10 − 0 = 10. Frequency ÷ width gives the bar's height, the frequency density.
- 2
— Width is only 5, so 12 plants make a tall bar: they are packed close together.
- 3
— Width 10. This is the tallest bar, so pick a scale up the side that reaches at least 3.
- 4
— Width 15. A wide class gets a shorter bar than its frequency suggests.
- 5
— Each bar runs exactly from the start to the end of its class, so the bars touch. Its height is the density you found.
Common mistake
Drawing the bars to the frequency (8, 12, 30, 18). With unequal widths the height must be the density.
Key idea
Write the densities in your working (an extra column in the table is fine). If a bar is drawn wrong, you still get a mark for them.
5. Filling Gaps in the Table and the Graph
The 2 to 4-mark question gives half a table and half a histogram. Go one way for each gap.
| You have | You work out |
| a bar, no frequency | height × width |
| a frequency, no bar | frequency ÷ width |
| neither, but the total | total minus the other classes |
Same 100 waiting times. The table has no number for 15 to 30, the graph has no bar for 40 to 60, and 30 to 40 is missing from both.
Worked example
- 1
— The bar is drawn but the table is blank. Find the width first.
- 2
— Height × width gives the frequency, because a bar's area is its frequency. Write 36 in the table.
- 3
— This time the table has 6 but the bar is missing.
- 4
— Frequency ÷ width gives the height. Draw the bar 0.3 high from 40 to 60.
- 5
— Neither is given, but the total is. Take every other class away from 100 to leave 16.
- 6
— Now it is a normal “frequency, no bar” gap: divide by the width 10 and draw the bar.
Common mistake
Taking the width of 40 to 60 as 40 or 60. Width is the top minus the bottom: 20.
6. Bar Heights in Centimetres
Some questions give no density scale at all, just one bar's height in centimetres. Heights match frequency densities, so compare densities, not frequencies.
20 people are in and 21 people are in . The bar is 6 cm tall. How tall is the other bar?
Worked example
- 1
— Frequency density of the bar you know: frequency ÷ width (5 − 0 = 5).
- 2
— A density of 4 is drawn 6 cm tall. 6 ÷ 4 gives 1.5 cm for each unit of density.
- 3
— Density of the other bar. Its width is 12 − 5 = 7.
- 4
— Multiply its density by 1.5 cm to get its height.
Common mistake
Scaling the frequencies (20 is 6 cm, so 21 is 6.3 cm). The widths differ, so only the densities are in proportion to the heights.
7. Which Method? Read the Question
Look at what is given and what is missing.
| You see | You do |
| Draw a histogram | frequency ÷ width for each bar |
| Total, or how many | height × width, then add |
| No scale, one frequency told | find that bar's height first |
| One bar’s height in cm given | find cm per unit of density |
| More than a value inside a bar | use only part of that bar |
| All classes the same width | Histograms (Equal Class Intervals) |
| Estimate the mean | Estimating the Mean for Grouped Data |
Key idea
Check your answer: the areas of all the bars add up to the total frequency.
