1. What a Pattern Sequence Is

Many questions show patterns made of sticks, dots or tiles. Pattern 1, Pattern 2, Pattern 3 … and you count what is in each.

Example

A row of squares made of sticks: Pattern 1 is one square (4 sticks). Each new square adds 3 sticks. So the counts go 4, 7, 10, 13.

Rule

What a pattern adds each time is the difference. It tells you the rule, just like a number sequence.

Key idea

Draw the next pattern by copying the last one and adding the new part. The count must go up by the difference.

2. Continuing the Pattern

The first marks are for drawing the next pattern and completing a table. Then comes a far-away pattern, like Pattern 10.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Count the sticks in Patterns 1 to 4 and write the counts in order.

  2. 2

    — Find the gap. Each new square adds 3 sticks, so the difference is 3.

  3. 3

    — Pattern 5 is Pattern 4 with one more square, so add 3. Pattern 5 has 16 sticks.

  4. 4

    — For a far pattern, use a rule. 3 sticks per square gives 3n, which is 3, 6, 9, 12.

  5. 5

    — Compare the first terms: 4 sticks, but 3n gives 3. Every count is 1 more than 3n.

  6. 6

    — So the rule is 3n + 1. The extra 1 is the starting stick on the left.

  7. 7

    — Put n = 10 into the rule. Pattern 10 has 31 sticks.

Common mistake

Adding 3 again and again to reach Pattern 10. It works, but slips are easy. Use the rule 3n + 1, and check it with n = 2: 3 × 2 + 1 = 7.

3. Which Pattern Has …?

Some questions give the count and ask for the pattern number, or ask whether a count is possible.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Which pattern has 64 sticks? Set the rule equal to 64.

  2. 2

    — Take 1 from both sides, so the n part is alone.

  3. 3

    — Divide both sides by 3. 21 is a whole number, so Pattern 21 has 64 sticks.

  4. 4

    — Now test 50 sticks the same way.

  5. 5

    — Take 1 from both sides.

  6. 6

    — Divide by 3. n is not a whole number, and there is no Pattern 16⅓, so no pattern has 50 sticks.

Key idea

A “Yes/No” question needs a reason. Show the equation and say whether n is a whole number.

4. Why a Number Cannot Be in It

“Explain why 238 cannot be in the sequence” often has a quick reason: odd and even.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The sequence starts at 5, an odd number, and adds 4 each time.

  2. 2

    — 4 is even, and odd + even is always odd. So every term is odd.

  3. 3

    — 238 ends in 8, so it is even. An even number cannot be a term, so 238 is not in the sequence.

Common mistake

Writing only “because it is not in the pattern”. Say why: every term is odd and 238 is even.

5. Two-Step Term-to-Term Rules

A term-to-term rule can have two steps, like “multiply by 3 then subtract 2”. Do the steps in order, starting from the term you have.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The first term, given in the question. The rule is × 3, then − 2.

  2. 2

    — First step: multiply by 3.

  3. 3

    — Second step: subtract 2. So the second term is 4.

  4. 4

    — Use both steps again on the new term: 12 − 2 = 10.

  5. 5

    — And again: 30 − 2 = 28. The sequence is 2, 4, 10, 28.

To go backwards, undo the steps in reverse order. The 5th term is 82. Find the 4th.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Undo the last step first: the rule subtracted 2, so add 2.

  2. 2

    — Then undo the multiply: divide by 3. The 4th term is 28.

Common mistake

Doing the steps in the wrong order. 4 × 3 − 2 = 10, but (4 − 2) × 3 = 6.

Key idea

Some gaps change by the same amount: 30, 28, 25, 21 takes away 2, 3, 4. Keep going: take away 5, then 6, to get 16 and 10.

6. Repeating Patterns

Some patterns repeat the same block of shapes. To find a far-away position, use the length of the block.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The block that repeats is 3 shapes long.

  2. 2

    — A triangle ends every block, so the triangles sit at the multiples of 3.

  3. 3

    — What is at position 50? Divide 50 by 3: 16 full blocks, remainder 2.

  4. 4

    — After 16 full blocks, count 2 more shapes: circle, square. Position 50 is a square.

Common mistake

Remainder 0 means the last shape of the block, not the first. 48 = 3 × 16, so position 48 is a triangle.

Key idea

“Explain why position 99 is a triangle”: 99 = 3 × 33, a multiple of 3, and every multiple of 3 is a triangle.

7. Special Sequences to Recognise

Some sequences are not linear. Learn these by sight; many questions are built from them.

NameTermsnth term
Square1, 4, 9, 16
Cube1, 8, 27, 64
Triangle1, 3, 6, 10
Powers of 22, 4, 8, 16

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The gaps are 3, 5, 7. They grow, so the sequence is not linear.

  2. 2

    — Write the square numbers underneath to compare.

  3. 3

    — Take each square away from the term above it. The answer is 1 every time.

  4. 4

    — So each term is a square number plus 1: the nth term is n² + 1.

Key idea

Bowling pins stand in a triangle: rows of 1, 2, 3 and 4 make , a triangle number. Add a fifth row and you get the next one, : exactly the number of red balls racked in a triangle in snooker.

8. Patterns With Two Parts

Many patterns use two kinds of tile, grey and white. The table asks for each kind and the total. Find a rule for each kind, then add them.

Example

Pattern n is an n by n square of white tiles, with grey tiles along its top and one side. The counts are: grey 3, 5, 7; white 1, 4, 9; total 4, 9, 16.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The grey tiles go up by 2 each time, so they are linear.

  2. 2

    — 2 each time gives 2n, which is 2, 4, 6. Each grey count is 1 more, so grey = 2n + 1.

  3. 3

    — The white tiles are the square numbers, so white = n².

  4. 4

    — Every pattern is grey plus white, so add the two rules to get the total.

  5. 5

    — Tidy it up, biggest power first. Check n = 1: 1 + 2 + 1 = 4.

  6. 6

    — Pattern 10 has 121 tiles. Check: 21 grey + 100 white = 121.

Common mistake

Starting again to find the total's rule. You already have the two parts: just add them.

Key idea

If a pattern is made of rows, total = rows × dots in each row. With n + 2 rows of 2n dots, Pattern 3 has 5 × 6 = 30 dots.

9. A Number in Both Sequences

Some questions give two sequences and ask for a number that is in both. Write out terms of each and look for a match.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Sequence S adds 6 each time. Write enough terms to give a match a chance.

  2. 2

    — For sequence T, put n = 1, 2, 3 … into the rule n² + 1.

  3. 3

    — 37 is in both lists, so 37 is a number in both sequences.

  4. 4

    — Check with S's nth term, 6n + 1: n = 6 gives 37, a whole n, so it really is a term.

Common mistake

Matching positions instead of numbers. The 3rd terms are 19 and 10; you need the same number, wherever it sits.

10. Which Method? Read the Question

Check the gaps first.

You seeYou do
Equal gapsLinear: difference × n, then adjust
“Pattern number 10”Use the rule, not ten drawings
“Which pattern has 64?”Set the rule = 64, solve for n
“Explain why … cannot”Odd/even, or n is not whole
Gaps that growCompare with squares, cubes, triangles
A rule like “× 3 then − 2”Do the steps in order; undo them in reverse
A repeating block of shapesDivide the position by the block length; use the remainder
Two kinds of tileA rule for each kind, then add them
“A number in both sequences”List terms of each and find a match

Key idea

Every “explain” mark needs a number or a reason, not just yes or no.
