1. What a Pie Chart Shows
A pie chart is a circle cut into slices, called sectors. The whole circle is everyone, and a full turn is .
A bigger share of the people gets a bigger angle.
| Share of the people | Angle |
| all of them | |
| half | |
| a quarter | |
| a tenth |
Rule
The angles in a pie chart always add up to .
Key idea
The first known pie charts appeared in 1801, in a book by the Scottish engineer William Playfair. One of them showed what share of the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire's land lay in Asia, Europe and Africa.
2. Fractions and Percentages
Exams often ask “What fraction chose …?” or “What percentage …?”. You only need the angle, because the whole circle is everyone.
Formula
Formula
angle is the size of the sector you are asked about, in degrees. 360 is the whole circle, which stands for all the people.
Worked example
- 1
— Measure the bus sector with a protractor: centre on the middle of the circle, 0 on one edge, read where the other edge crosses. It is 108°.
- 2
— Put the sector's angle over the whole circle. This is the fraction of people who took the bus.
- 3
— Simplify. 36 is the biggest number that goes into both 108 and 360, so divide top and bottom by 36.
- 4
— For a percentage, times the fraction by 100. So 30% took the bus.
Key idea
“Which is the mode?” is the biggest sector, the one with the largest angle. You do not need to work anything out.
Common mistake
Writing 108 out of 100. The whole circle is 360°, not 100, so the bottom of the fraction is 360.
3. From Frequency to Angle
The 2-mark question: “Work out the angle for …”. Each sector gets its share of the .
Formula
frequency is how many people are in that group. total is everyone in the survey. Example: 60 people chose a favourite fruit: 21 apple, 18 banana, 12 pear, 9 grape.
Worked example
- 1
— Share the 360° equally between the 60 people. Each person gets 6°. This is the formula done in a handy order.
- 2
— 21 people chose apple, and each one is worth 6°, so times 21 by 6.
- 3
— Same move for banana: 18 people at 6° each.
- 4
— Pear: 12 people at 6° each.
- 5
— Grape: 9 people at 6° each.
- 6
— Check: the angles must make a full turn. If they do not, one of them is wrong.
Common mistake
Multiplying by 100 instead of 360. That gives a percentage, 35%, not an angle.
Key idea
Given percentages instead? 1% of the circle is , so 35% is .
Key idea
Write the working, e.g. . If your answer slips, that line still earns a mark. In a “Show that” question the working is the answer, so write every number.
4. Drawing a Pie Chart
After the angles, exams often say “Complete the pie chart”. Each sector drawn correctly earns marks, so draw with a protractor, one sector at a time. Here are the fruit angles: 126°, 108°, 72° and 54°.
Worked example
- 1
— Every sector needs an edge to measure from. Draw a line from the centre straight up to the circle, unless the exam has drawn one.
- 2
— Put the protractor's centre on the circle's centre and its 0 on the start line. Mark 126° and join the mark to the centre.
- 3
— Now put 0 on the apple line you just drew, not the start line. Mark 108° and join it to the centre.
- 4
— Same again, measuring from the banana line.
- 5
— Grape is the gap that is left. Measure it: if it is not 54°, one of your earlier sectors is off.
- 6
— Write apple, banana, pear and grape in their slices, so the reader knows which is which.
Common mistake
Measuring every sector from the start line. Each new sector starts where the last one ended.
Key idea
A protractor has two scales, and 126 on one is 54 on the other. Check by eye: 126° is more than a right angle, so the apple slice must be wider than a quarter.
5. From Angle to Frequency
The 2 or 3-mark question gives the angles and asks “How many people …?”. Often you know one sector's number. Beach is and 45 people. Walking is .
Worked example
- 1
— Start from the sector you know: 150° stands for 45 people.
- 2
— Divide to find what one degree stands for: 0.3 of a person. Then any angle can be turned into people.
- 3
— Walking is 80°, and each degree is 0.3 people, so 80 × 0.3 = 24 people.
- 4
— If asked for everyone, use the whole circle: 360 × 0.3 = 108 people.
If the question gives the total instead, use this formula:
Formula
angle is the sector's angle, 360 is the whole circle, and total is everyone in the survey. Example: 108 people, a 90° sector.
Worked example
- 1
— A 90° sector is a quarter of the circle, so it is a quarter of the people.
- 2
— A quarter of the 108 people is 27 people.
Common mistake
Using 45 as the total. 45 is only the beach sector, not the whole circle.
6. When You Know the Difference
Some questions give no sector's number. Instead they say “30 more people came by car than by bus”. The gap in angles stands for the gap in people.
Car is , bus is , and the rest walk. 30 more people came by car than by bus. How many walk?
Worked example
- 1
— Find the gap between the car and bus sectors: 40°.
- 2
— The extra 40° is the extra 30 people, so these two match.
- 3
— Divide to find what one degree stands for: 0.75 of a person.
- 4
— Walk is the rest of the circle, because the angles add up to 360°.
- 5
— Turn walk's angle into people: 120 × 0.75 = 90.
Key idea
Check: car is 140 × 0.75 = 105 and bus is 100 × 0.75 = 75. 105 − 75 = 30, as the question said.
Common mistake
Using 30 as the number for car. The 30 is the gap between two sectors, so match it with the gap in angles.
7. Completing the Table
The 3-mark question: a table with some frequencies and some angles missing. Find the degrees for each person from a full row, then fill the gaps.
| Drink | Frequency | Angle |
| Tea | 8 | 96° |
| Coffee | ? | 120° |
| Juice | 5 | ? |
| Water | ? | ? |
30 people were asked.
Worked example
- 1
— Tea is the only row with both numbers. 96° for 8 people means each person gets 12°.
- 2
— To turn an angle into people, divide by 12°. So 10 people chose coffee.
- 3
— To turn people into an angle, times by 12°.
- 4
— Add up the angles you know so far.
- 5
— The angles add up to 360°, so water gets what is left.
- 6
— Turn water's angle into people by dividing by 12°.
- 7
— Check: the people add up to the 30 who were asked.
Common mistake
Measuring the last sector by eye. Take the other angles away from .
8. Ratios and Comparing Pie Charts
The 1 or 2-mark question: a ratio from the angles, or "Is this person right?" about two pie charts.
Worked example
- 1
— Every animal gets the same number of degrees, so the angles are in the same ratio as the numbers. Write the two angles.
- 2
— Divide both by 60, the biggest number that goes into both. This is the simplest form.
Class A has 40 students and Class B has 200. Both pie charts have a sector for football.
Worked example
- 1
— 90° is a quarter of the circle, and a quarter of Class A's 40 students is 10.
- 2
— Same angle, but a quarter of Class B's 200 students is 50.
- 3
— Same angle, different numbers. An angle shows a share of the group, not how many.
Common mistake
Saying the same angle means the same number of people. A pie chart shows shares, so you need each total.
Key idea
“If more data is added, will an angle change?” Yes, if the total changes. A group that got no new people has the same number out of a bigger total, so its share and its angle get smaller.
9. Which Method? Read the Question
Every question comes back to one fact: the whole circle is everyone.
| You see | You do |
| Work out the angle | 360 ÷ total, times the frequency |
| Complete the pie chart | measure each sector from the last line drawn |
| What fraction or percentage | angle ÷ 360 (then × 100 for %) |
| Which is the mode | the biggest sector |
| How many, total given | angle ÷ 360, times the total |
| How many, one sector given | people ÷ its angle, times the new angle |
| “… more than …” | gap in angles = gap in people |
| Complete the table | degrees per person from a full row |
| Last sector missing | 360 take away the others |
| Ratio of two groups | ratio of their angles, simplified |
| Actual numbers, side by side | Bar Charts and Composite Bar Charts |
| Symbols with a key | Pictograms |
Key idea
Always check: the angles add to 360 and the frequencies add to the total.
