Rounding

1. What Rounding Means

التقريب يعني أن نستبدل بالعدد عددًا أبسط قريبًا منه. للتقريب لأقرب عشرة نسأل: إلى أي عشرة هو أقرب؟ القاعدة: حدّد الخانة التي تقرّب إليها، ثم انظر إلى الرقم الواحد الذي على يمينها مباشرة. إن كان خمسة أو أكثر نقرّب للأعلى فيزيد رقم الخانة واحدًا، وإن كان أربعة أو أقل يبقى كما هو. ثم نضع أصفارًا في الخانات التي بعدها حتى يبقى العدد بحجمه نفسه. والعدد الواقع في المنتصف تمامًا يُقرّب دائمًا للأعلى.

Rounding swaps a number for a simpler one that is close to it. 268 people is about 270 people.

To round to the nearest 10, ask: which ten is it closer to? 268 sits between 260 and 270, and it is nearer 270.

Rule

Find the place you round to. Look at the ONE digit just to its right. 5 or more: round up. 4 or less: keep the digit.

Worked example

$268$ — Nearest 10 means the answer is a whole number of tens. The digit just right of the tens is the units digit, 8, so it decides.

$8 \geq 5$ — 8 is 5 or more, so 268 is past halfway (265). Round up.

$26 tens \to 27 tens$ — Rounding up adds 1 to the tens digit: 6 tens becomes 7 tens.

$270$ — Put 0 in the units place. 270 is a whole number of tens and is still about the same size as 268.

Key idea

Exactly halfway, like 265, always rounds up: 265 becomes 270.

2. Nearest Thousand

هذا أكثر سؤال شائع: التقريب لأقرب ألف. الإجابة يجب أن تكون عددًا كاملًا من الآلاف. الرقم الذي يقرر هو رقم المئات، أي الرقم الذي على يمين الآلاف مباشرة. إن كان خمسة أو أكثر نزيد الآلاف واحدًا، ثم نضع أصفارًا في المئات والعشرات والآحاد. الخطأ الشائع: كتابة عدد الآلاف وحده، والصحيح أن تحافظ الإجابة على حجم العدد الأصلي. وإذا كان الرقم تسعة وزاد فإنه يحمل إلى الخانة التالية كما في العدّ، والخانات الأكبر مثل الملايين تعمل بالطريقة نفسها.

The 1-mark question, the most common one: "Write 58 746 correct to the nearest thousand."

$58746$ — Nearest thousand means the answer is a whole number of thousands. There are 58 thousands.

$58746$ — The digit just right of the thousands is the hundreds digit, 7. Only this digit decides.

$7 \geq 5$ — 7 is 5 or more, so 58 746 is past halfway (58 500). Round up.

$58 thousands \to 59 thousands$ — Rounding up adds 1 to the thousands.

$59000$ — Put 0 in the hundreds, tens and units, so the answer keeps its size.

Common mistake

Writing just 59. The answer must keep its size: 58 746 is about 59 000, not 59.

Key idea

A 9 that rounds up carries on, like counting. 39 612 to the nearest thousand: 39 thousands becomes 40 thousands, so 40 000.

Key idea

Bigger places work the same way. For the nearest million, the hundred-thousands digit decides: 27 614 380 has a 6 there, so it rounds up to 28 000 000.

3. Nearest Hundred

للتقريب لأقرب مئة، الرقم الذي يقرر هو رقم العشرات، أي الذي على يمين المئات مباشرة، وما بعده لا يهم. إن كان أقل من خمسة نقرّب للأسفل فيبقى رقم المئات كما هو، ونضع أصفارًا في العشرات والآحاد. الخطأ الشائع: التقريب مرتين، مرة لأقرب عشرة ثم لأقرب مئة، فتتغير الإجابة. انظر إلى الرقم المقرِّر مرة واحدة في العدد الأصلي. وانتبه للحمل عندما تكون خانة المئات تسعة.

$7349$ — Nearest hundred means the answer is a whole number of hundreds. The hundreds digit is 3, so there are 73 hundreds.

$7349$ — The digit just right of the hundreds is the tens digit, 4. It decides. The 9 after it does not count.

$4 < 5$ — 4 is less than 5, so 7349 is below halfway (7350). Round down.

$7300$ — Rounding down keeps the 3 as it is. Put 0 in the tens and units.

Common mistake

Rounding twice: 7349 to 7350, then 7350 to 7400. Look at the deciding digit once, in the number you were given. The answer is 7300.

Key idea

Carrying again: 42 961 to the nearest hundred. 429 hundreds becomes 430 hundreds, so 43 000.

4. Nearest Ten and Whole Number

للتقريب لأقرب عشرة يقرر رقم الآحاد، والعدد الواقع في المنتصف تمامًا يُقرّب للأعلى. نزيد العشرات واحدًا ونضع صفرًا في الآحاد. والكسور العشرية تُقرّب بالطريقة نفسها: لأقرب عشرة يقرر رقم الآحاد ونحذف كل ما بعد الفاصلة، ولأقرب عدد صحيح يقرر أول رقم بعد الفاصلة ثم نحذف الأرقام العشرية. الأخطاء الشائعة: إعطاء أقرب عدد صحيح بدل أقرب عشرة، وإبقاء الأرقام العشرية في الإجابة.

$4725$ — Nearest ten: there are 472 tens. The digit just right of the tens is the units digit, 5, so it decides.

$5 \geq 5$ — 4725 is exactly halfway between 4720 and 4730. Halfway always rounds up.

Decimals round the same way. Here is 63.8 rounded two ways.

$63 .8$ — Nearest 10: the units digit, 3, is just right of the tens, so it decides. The 8 after the point does not count.

$3 < 5$ — 3 is less than 5, so round down: keep the 6 tens.

$60$ — Put 0 in the units and drop everything after the point. A whole ten has no decimal part.

$63. 8$ — Nearest whole number: the first digit after the point, 8, decides.

$8 \geq 5$ — 8 is 5 or more, so round up: 63 becomes 64.

$64$ — Drop the digits after the point. A whole number has nothing after it.

Common mistake

Answering 64 when the question says nearest 10. Read the place first: nearest 10 ends in a 0.

Common mistake

Keeping the decimals. 5418.67 to the nearest hundred is 5400, not 5400.67.

5. Working Backwards

بعض الأسئلة تعكس التقريب: «عدد قُرّب إلى قيمة معيّنة، ماذا يمكن أن يكون؟». أوجد نقطة المنتصف على كل جانب. المنتصف من الأسفل يدخل في الإجابة لأن المنتصف يُقرّب للأعلى، أما المنتصف من الأعلى فلا يدخل لأنه يُقرّب إلى العشرة التالية. وإذا أضاف السؤال شرطًا، مثل أن يكون مضاعفًا لعدد ما، فاكتب المضاعفات القريبة واختر الذي يقع داخل المدى. الخطأ الشائع: الظن أن العدد المقرّب يكشف لأي خانة قُرّب، فقد يكون العدد نفسه ناتج تقريب لأقرب عشرة ولأقرب مئة معًا.

Some questions turn rounding round: "A number rounds to 30. What could it be?" Find the halfway point on each side.

Worked example

$30$ — A whole number rounds to 30 to the nearest ten. It must be nearer 30 than 20 or 40.

$25$ — Halfway down to 20 is 25. Halfway rounds up, so 25 rounds to 30. It is in.

$35$ — Halfway up to 40 is 35. It rounds up to 40, so 35 is out.

$25, 26, \dots, 34$ — So the number is any whole number from 25 to 34.

The question may add a clue: "It is also a multiple of 8. Find it."

$24, 32, 40$ — List the multiples of 8 near 30.

$24 < 25$ — 24 is below 25, so it rounds to 20. Out.

$40 > 34$ — 40 is past 34. Out.

$32$ — 32 is between 25 and 34, so the number is 32.

Key idea

Table questions work the same: the numbers that round to 7000 to the nearest thousand go from 6500 up to 7499.

Common mistake

Thinking a rounded number shows how it was rounded. 6197 is 6200 to the nearest 10 and also to the nearest 100, so from 6200 alone you cannot tell which.

6. Which Method? Read the Question

Key idea

Check your answer: it should be close to the number you started with, and end in the right number of zeros.
