Time Calculations

Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 · Edexcel IGCSE Maths 4MA1 · Cambridge O Level Maths 4024

1. Time Is Counted in 60s

Time does not work in tens. There are 60 minutes in an hour, so you cannot use normal decimal sums on clock times.

UnitEquals
1 minute60 seconds
1 hour60 minutes
1 day24 hours
1 week7 days
1 year12 months, or 365 days (366 in a leap year)

A time can be written two ways. The 12-hour clock uses am and pm. The 24-hour clock counts on past 12, so 3:20 pm is 15:20.

Rule

When the minutes reach 60, they become 1 hour. So 85 minutes is 1 hour 25 minutes.

Key idea

Why 60 and not 100? Counting in 60s goes back over 4000 years to Sumer and Babylon (modern Iraq), because 60 splits evenly into halves, thirds, quarters, fifths and sixths. Around the year 1000, the scholar al-Biruni split the hour into 60 minutes and each minute into 60 seconds.

2. How Long Did It Take?

The 2-mark question: something starts at one time and ends at another. How long is that, in hours and minutes? Count on in three jumps.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Count up to the next whole hour first. Whole hours are easy to count from.

  2. 2

    — Now jump in whole hours: from 9 to 14 is 14 − 9 = 5 hours.

  3. 3

    — The end time is 14:15, so 15 minutes are left over.

  4. 4

    — Add the two minute jumps. 30 is less than 60, so it stays as minutes.

  5. 5

    — Put the hours and the minutes together. That is how long it took.

Common mistake

Taking away like decimals: . There are 60 minutes in an hour, not 100, so this is wrong.

If it goes past midnight, count up to 24:00 and carry on from 00:00.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Count up to the next whole hour, as before.

  2. 2

    — Count on to midnight. On the 24-hour clock midnight is 24:00.

  3. 3

    — Midnight is also 00:00, the start of the new day. Count on to 06:00.

  4. 4

    — Add the two hour jumps.

  5. 5

    — The minutes left over at the end.

  6. 6

    — Add the minute jumps. 25 is less than 60, so it stays as minutes.

  7. 7

    — Put the hours and minutes together.

Key idea

A flight that lands "next day, London time" uses one clock for both times. Just count on.

Key idea

Write each jump down. In a 2-mark question one mark is often for the working, such as the 5 hours or the total in minutes, even if the final answer slips.

3. 12-Hour and 24-Hour Clock

The 1-mark question: write a time on the other clock, or read a clock face.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — pm means after midday, and midday is 12:00. So add 12 to the hours. The minutes do not change.

  2. 2

    — The hour is more than 12, so it is after midday. Take 12 away from the hours and write pm.

  3. 3

    — The hour is less than 12, so it is morning. Keep the numbers, drop the 0 at the front and write am.

  4. 4

    — 00 is the first hour after midnight. On the 12-hour clock that hour is called 12, so write 12:20 am.

You seeTime
quarter past 3 (pm)15:15
half past 8 (am)08:30
quarter to 5 (pm)16:45

Rule

On a clock face the short hand shows the hour and the long hand shows the minutes. Each number is 5 minutes for the long hand, so pointing at 4 means 20 minutes past. Just before the hour, the short hand is almost on the next number.

Common mistake

Taking 10 away instead of 12: 16:35 is 4:35 pm, not 6:35 pm. And 12:30 pm stays 12:30.

Key idea

"Quarter to 5" means 15 minutes before 5, so it is 4:45, not 5:45.

4. Adding Times Together

The 3-mark question gives a start time and a list of parts. When does it finish? Or how long is the missing part?

Start 10:40. The parts take 35 minutes, 1 hour 20 minutes and 50 minutes.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Add the minutes-only parts first: 35 and 50.

  2. 2

    — 85 is more than 60, so take 60 minutes out as 1 hour. 85 − 60 = 25 minutes are left.

  3. 3

    — Add the part with hours: 1 + 1 = 2 hours, and 25 + 20 = 45 minutes.

  4. 4

    — Count on from the start time. Do the 2 whole hours first.

  5. 5

    — Then the 45 minutes: 20 minutes takes you to 13:00, and 25 more makes 13:25.

Common mistake

Writing 85 minutes as 1 hour 85 minutes, or as 0.85 hours. Take 60 minutes out to make an hour.

Minutes and seconds work the same way. Songs of 3 minutes 48 seconds and 5 minutes 25 seconds must fill 15 minutes.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Add the seconds first, just like the minutes in the last example.

  2. 2

    — 73 is more than 60, so take 60 seconds out as 1 minute.

  3. 3

    — Now add the minutes, plus the 1 minute carried from the seconds.

  4. 4

    — The songs must fill 15 minutes, so take away the time already used.

  5. 5

    — Count on to the next whole minute: 60 − 13 = 47 seconds.

  6. 6

    — Then count on in whole minutes up to 15.

  7. 7

    — Put the two jumps together. That is the time left for the last song.

5. Changing Units of Time

Some questions need time in other units. How many things happen in a time? Change the time into the same unit as the rate.

A machine makes one bottle every 6 seconds, from 08:15 to 11:45.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Count on in whole hours first: 11 − 8 = 3 hours.

  2. 2

    — Then the minutes left: 45 − 15 = 30 minutes.

  3. 3

    — 1 hour is 60 minutes, so multiply the hours by 60.

  4. 4

    — Add the 30 extra minutes. The whole time is now in one unit.

  5. 5

    — The rate is in seconds, so change the time to seconds too: 1 minute is 60 seconds.

  6. 6

    — One bottle every 6 seconds, so find how many 6s fit into 12 600: divide.

A calculator gives decimal hours. Multiply the decimal part by 60 to get minutes.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Split off the whole hours. Only the decimal part needs changing.

  2. 2

    — The decimal part is a part of one hour. An hour is 60 minutes, so multiply it by 60.

  3. 3

    — Put the whole hours back with the minutes.

Common mistake

Reading 2.25 hours as 2 hours 25 minutes. A quarter of an hour is 15 minutes.

Key idea

Going the other way, divide. Minutes ÷ 60 gives hours. Seconds ÷ 3600 gives hours, because 60 × 60 = 3600 seconds make an hour. So 9000 seconds is 9000 ÷ 3600 = 2.5 hours.

6. Working Backwards

Some questions give the finish time and ask when it started, or the latest time you can leave. Count back instead of on. Lena must be at school by 08:20. She takes 15 minutes to shower, 25 minutes to eat and 35 minutes on the bus. What is the latest time she can get up?

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Add all the parts first, so you only count back once.

  2. 2

    — 75 is more than 60, so take 60 minutes out as 1 hour.

  3. 3

    — Count back the whole hour first.

  4. 4

    — Then count back the 15 minutes: 20 − 15 = 5.

  5. 5

    — Check by counting forward. It lands on 08:20, so 07:05 is right.

When the minutes run out, count back to the whole hour first. A film lasts 2 hours 40 minutes and ends at 22:15. When did it start?

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Count back the whole hours first.

  2. 2

    — Count back 15 minutes to reach the whole hour.

  3. 3

    — The rest of the 40 minutes is 40 − 15 = 25. Before 20:00 means 19-something, and 60 − 25 = 35.

  4. 4

    — Check by counting forward: it ends at 22:15, as the question says.

Common mistake

Taking away like decimals: 22.15 − 2.40 = 19.75. There is no such time as 19:75. Count back across the hour instead.

7. Reading a Timetable

Timetable questions ask you to fill in missing times or to find a wait. Each column is one bus. Each row is one stop. Every bus takes the same time between the same stops.

StopBus 1Bus 2Bus 3
Northgate09:2510:4013:55
Market Square09:4811:03…
Riverside10:12…14:42

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Use Bus 1, the full column. Northgate to Market Square takes 48 − 25 = 23 minutes.

  2. 2

    — Market Square to Riverside: 12 minutes up to 10:00, then 12 more, so 24 minutes.

  3. 3

    — Bus 2 needs its Riverside time. Every bus takes the same time, so add 24 minutes: 3 + 24 = 27.

  4. 4

    — Bus 3 needs its Market Square time. 5 minutes takes you to 14:00, then 18 more.

  5. 5

    — Check against the time already printed. 14:18 plus 24 minutes is 14:42, which matches.

  6. 6

    — You reach Market Square at 10:35, after Bus 1 has gone. The next bus there is at 11:03: 25 minutes to 11:00, then 3 more.

Common mistake

Counting gaps instead of buses. Buses leave every 20 minutes from 09:00 to 11:00. That is 120 ÷ 20 = 6 gaps, but the 09:00 bus counts too, so there are 7 buses.

8. Time Zones

When you fly, the local time can change. “Ahead” means the clocks there show a later time, so add the difference. “Behind” means earlier, so take it away. A plane leaves Dubai at 22:40 on Monday. The flight takes 7 hours 25 minutes. Singapore is 4 hours ahead of Dubai. Find the day and local time in Singapore when it lands.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Add the flight's whole hours first. 22 + 7 = 29, and 29 − 24 = 5, so it has passed midnight: 05:40 on Tuesday.

  2. 2

    — Then the minutes: 20 minutes to 06:00, then 5 more.

  3. 3

    — This is still Dubai time, because we started from the Dubai clock.

  4. 4

    — Singapore is 4 hours ahead, so its clocks show a later time. Add 4 hours.

  5. 5

    — The landing time in Singapore. Give the day too, because the question asks for it.

Common mistake

Going the wrong way. Ahead means later, so add. Behind means earlier, so take away.

Key idea

Some differences include half an hour, such as 5½ hours. Add the 5 hours, then the 30 minutes: 20:50 plus 5½ hours is 02:20 the next day.

9. Which Method? Read the Question
