Same Shape, Same Size
Two shapes are congruent when they are exactly the same shape and exactly the same size. One would fit perfectly on top of the other.
A congruent shape can be turned, flipped or moved. It is still congruent.
| Word | Means |
| Congruent | same shape, same size |
| Similar | same shape, any size |
Rule
Congruent shapes have all matching sides equal and all matching angles equal.
Spot the Congruent Pair
The 1-mark question shows shapes on a grid and says two are congruent. Count the squares along each side and compare.
Worked example
- 1
— Count the squares along the two short sides of the shaded triangle. These two numbers are what we compare.
- 2
— The same two numbers, the other way round. A is the shaded triangle turned on its side, so it is congruent.
- 3
— Both numbers are doubled, so B is the same shape but bigger. Different size means similar only, not congruent.
- 4
— The same two numbers in the same places. D is the shaded triangle flipped over, so it is congruent.
Common mistake
Picking the bigger copy. Same shape but a different size is similar, not congruent.
Draw a Congruent Shape
The 1-mark question: draw a shape congruent to the one on the grid. Copy every side, one at a time. You can draw it turned or flipped.
Worked example
- 1
— Start at any grid point and copy the first side exactly. Count 4 squares along.
- 2
— From the end of that side, go 2 squares up to copy the next side.
- 3
— Copy a sloping side by counting squares across and up. Never judge its length by eye.
- 4
— Copy the flat top side: 2 squares to the left.
- 5
— Go 3 squares down. We are back at the start, so the shape closes. If it does not close, one count is wrong.
Common mistake
Drawing a sloping edge by guessing its length. Copy how many squares it goes across and up.
Congruence Tests (Extended/Higher)
Exams ask you to show that two triangles are congruent. You do not need all six measurements. One of four tests is enough.
| Test | What must match |
| SSS | all three sides |
| SAS | two sides and the angle between them |
| ASA or AAS | two angles and one side, in the same place in both triangles |
| RHS | a right angle, the longest side (hypotenuse) and one other side |
Triangle has cm, cm and angle . Triangle has cm, cm and angle . Are they congruent?
Worked example
- 1
— A first pair of equal sides. We mark it S, for side.
- 2
— A second pair of equal sides. Another S.
- 3
— This angle sits between the two equal sides in each triangle. We mark it A, for angle.
- 4
— Side, angle, side is the SAS test, so the triangles are congruent. Write the letters in matching order: A with P, B with Q, C with R.
Now two right-angled triangles. has a right angle at , cm and cm. has a right angle at , cm and cm.
Worked example
- 1
— Both triangles have a right angle. That is the R in RHS.
- 2
— These sides are opposite the right angles, so they are the hypotenuses, the longest sides. They are equal. That is the H.
- 3
— One more pair of equal sides. That is the S.
- 4
— Right angle, hypotenuse, side is the RHS test, so the triangles are congruent.
Common mistake
Using three equal angles. That only proves the triangles are similar, because a small and a big triangle can have the same angles. Two sides and an angle that is not between them also does not work.
Write a Proof (Extended/Higher)
A proof question says “show that” and wants a reason for every statement. Write each pair of equal sides or angles on its own line, then name the test.
Triangle has , and is the midpoint of . Show that triangle is congruent to triangle .
Worked example
- 1
— Given in the question, because the triangle is isosceles.
- 2
— is the midpoint of , so it cuts into two equal parts.
- 3
— is a side of both triangles, so it is equal to itself. We call it a common side.
- 4
— Three pairs of equal sides is the SSS test, so the triangles are congruent.
Now a proof that needs an angle. Lines and cross at , and is the midpoint of both and . Show that triangle is congruent to triangle .
Worked example
- 1
— is the midpoint of .
- 2
— The lines cross at , so the angles facing each other are vertically opposite angles. They are equal.
- 3
— is the midpoint of .
- 4
— Side, angle, side with the angle between the two sides is the SAS test, so the triangles are congruent. matches and matches .
Key idea
Every line needs a reason. Useful ones: given, midpoint, common side, vertically opposite angles, alternate angles. “They look equal” is not a reason. Finish by naming the test.
Which Method? Read the Question
Check the size first, then the shape.
| You see | You do |
| Which two are congruent? | compare every side |
| Draw a congruent shape | copy each side square by square |
| Similar but not congruent | same shape, different size |
| Draw a similar shape | Enlargement |
| Prove two triangles congruent | the four tests (SSS, SAS, ASA, RHS), then give reasons |
Key idea
Turning, flipping or sliding a shape never changes its size, so the image is always congruent.
