What a Reflection Does
A reflection flips a shape over a mirror line. The image is the same size, but it faces the other way.
Rule
Take each corner straight across to the mirror line, at right angles. Then go the same distance again on the other side.
Key idea
A point on the mirror line does not move. Draw the mirror line on the grid before you start.
Key idea
On the front of many ambulances, the word AMBULANCE is written backwards. A driver ahead sees it in the rear-view mirror, the mirror reflects it, and it reads the right way round.
Reflecting in y = x
The most common 2-mark question: reflect a shape in . It is the slanting line through (0, 0), (1, 1), (2, 2).
Worked example
- 1
— Take the first corner. Its x is 4 and its y is 1.
- 2
— Swap the two numbers. The line sends each x to the y place and each y to the x place.
- 3
— Second corner: swap again. 6 and 1 trade places.
- 4
— Third corner: swap again.
- 5
— A point with x equal to y is already on the line , so it does not move.
- 6
— Check: the point halfway between (4, 1) and its image (1, 4) has x equal to y, so it is on the mirror line.
Common mistake
Reflecting in the y-axis instead. The line is the diagonal, not the upright axis.
Key idea
For , swap and change both signs: (4, 1) goes to (−1, −4).
Reflecting in a Vertical Line
The 2-mark question: reflect in . Every point on this line has x equal to 5, so it goes straight up and down.
Worked example
- 1
— Take the corner (2, 1). The line is upright, so only the x number changes. The y stays 1.
- 2
— Find the distance from the corner to the line: 3 squares across.
- 3
— Go the same distance again, on the other side of the line. That is to the right, so add.
- 4
— Write the image. The new x is 8 and the y is still 1.
- 5
— Next corner (3, 1): its distance from the line is 2 squares.
- 6
— Go 2 past the line, so the new x is 7.
- 7
— The last corner (2, 4) has the same x as the first, so its new x is also 8. The y stays 4.
Exams also use lines such as . The method is the same. Take care with the signs.
Worked example
- 1
— Now a line on the negative side. It is still upright, so only the x number changes.
- 2
— Distance from the line to the corner: take away the line's x. Use brackets for the negative. The corner is 3 to the right.
- 3
— Go the same distance again, to the left of the line, so take 3 away from .
- 4
— Write the image. The y stays 3.
- 5
— Another corner, , is on the left of the line. Its distance is 2.
- 6
— Go 2 past the line to the right, so add 2 to .
Common mistake
Drawing as a flat line. It is upright, through (5, 0).
Reflecting in a Horizontal Line
The 2-mark question: reflect in . This line goes straight across, through (0, −1).
Worked example
- 1
— Take the corner (2, 1). The line is flat, so only the y number changes. The x stays 2.
- 2
— Distance from the line to the corner: take away the line's y, with brackets for the negative. The corner is 2 above the line.
- 3
— Go the same distance again, below the line, so take 2 away from .
- 4
— Write the image. The x stays 2.
- 5
— Next corner: it has the same y, so the distance and the new y are the same. The x stays 4.
- 6
— Last corner (2, 2): its distance from the line is 3.
- 7
— Go 3 below the line, so the new y is . The x stays 2.
Common mistake
Counting from the x-axis. Count from the mirror line .
Slanting Mirror Lines (Extended/Higher)
Some Extended and Higher questions use a slanting mirror line that misses the origin, such as . Shift the point so the line becomes , swap, then shift back.
Worked example
- 1
— The line is the line moved up 1. So lower the point 1 and the line becomes .
- 2
— Lower the point by 1: take 1 from the y.
- 3
— Now reflect in : swap the two numbers.
- 4
— Raise the point by 1 to put the line back: add 1 to the y.
- 5
— Check: the point halfway between (2, 5) and (4, 3) is (3, 4). Its y is its x plus 1, so it is on the mirror line.
Key idea
Do these three moves for every corner. For the line , which slopes downward, swap the coordinates and take each one from 6: .
Common mistake
Shifting the point the wrong way. Move it the same way the line must move to become . The line must come down, so lower the point first.
Which Method? Read the Question
Look at the equation of the mirror line.
| You see | You do |
| Reflect in | swap the coordinates |
| Reflect in | swap and change both signs |
| Reflect in | upright line: only x changes |
| Reflect in | flat line: only y changes |
| Reflect in the x-axis or y-axis | the x-axis is (flat), the y-axis is (upright) |
| Reflect in | lower, swap, raise (Extended/Higher) |
| Describe fully | Describing Transformations |
Key idea
Check: the mirror line should be exactly halfway between each corner and its image.
