The question, in short
Solve the simultaneous equations x − y = 7 and x² + y = 149, showing all working.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 5 marks
- 1From x − y = 7: y = x − 7
- 2x² + x − 7 = 149
- 3x² + x − 156 = 0
- 4(x − 12)(x + 13) = 0
- 5x = 12 or x = −13, so y = 12 − 7 or y = −13 − 7
- 6x = 12, y = 5 or x = −13, y = −20
Answerx = 12, y = 5 or x = −13, y = −20
