The question, in short
Prakash buys 45 flowers in bunches of 5 at a 3-for-2 offer; find the cost, the red:orange:yellow ratio, and work with expressions for flowers given to relatives.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 3 marks
Using the 3-for-2 bunch offer at $2.68 per bunch, work out the total Prakash pays for 45 flowers.
- 145 ÷ 5 = 9 bunches
- 29 bunches = 3 lots of 3 bunches, paying for 2 bunches each time
- 33 × 2 = 6 bunches paid for
- 46 × 2.68 = $16.08
Answer16.08
Part (b) · 2 marks
With 15 red and 18 orange flowers, find the red:orange:yellow ratio in simplest form.
- 1Yellow = 45 − 15 − 18 = 12
- 215 : 18 : 12
- 3Divide by 3: 5 : 6 : 4
Answer5:6:4
Part (ci) · 3 marks
Using x for grandmother, 8 more for mother, 6 fewer for cousin, and double the cousin for sister, show 5x − 10 = 45.
- 1Grandmother x, mother x + 8, cousin x − 6, sister 2(x − 6)
- 2x + x + 8 + x − 6 + 2(x − 6) = 45
- 3x + x + 8 + x − 6 + 2x − 12 = 45
- 45x − 10 = 45
Answerx + x + 8 + x − 6 + 2(x − 6) = 45 leading to 5x − 10 = 45 with no errors seen
Part (cii) · 2 marks
Solve the equation 5x − 10 = 45 for x.
- 15x = 45 + 10 = 55
- 2x = 11
Answer11
Part (ciii) · 1 mark
Find how many flowers Prakash gives his cousin.
- 15x − 10 = 45, so 5x = 55 and x = 11
- 2Cousin gets 6 fewer than grandmother: x − 6
- 311 − 6 = 5
