The question, in short
Annette travels 70 km from Midville to Newtown, cycling 1 hour 30 minutes at 20 km/h, resting 30 minutes, then riding at 16 km/h. Use the distance–time grid to show the trip and work out overall average speed.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 3 marks
Plot the journey on the distance–time grid, showing each stage of motion and the rest.
- 1Stage 1: 20 × 1.5 = 30 km, so draw a line from (0, 0) to (1.5, 30)
- 2Stop: horizontal line from (1.5, 30) to (2, 30)
- 3Remaining 70 − 30 = 40 km at 16 km/h takes 40 ÷ 16 = 2.5 h
- 4Draw a line from (2, 30) to (4.5, 70)
Answercorrect graph
Part (b) · 3 marks
Work out the average speed over the entire 70 km journey.
- 1Time for last stage = (70 − 30) ÷ 16 = 2.5 h
- 2Total time = 1.5 + 0.5 + 2.5 = 4.5 h
- 3Average speed = 70 ÷ 4.5 = 15.55… ≈ 15.6 km/h
Answer15.6 or 15.55 to 15.56
