The question, in short
Factorise two algebraic expressions completely: a four-term expression in m, p and k, and a two-term expression in x and y.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Factorise 2m + 3p − 8km − 12kp completely by grouping terms.
- 12m + 3p − 8km − 12kp = (2m + 3p) − 4k(2m + 3p)
- 2= (2m + 3p)(1 − 4k)
Answer(2m + 3p)(1 − 4k)
Part (b) · 3 marks
Factorise 5x² − 20y² completely.
- 15x² − 20y² = 5(x² − 4y²)
- 2x² − 4y² = (x − 2y)(x + 2y) (difference of two squares)
- 3= 5(x − 2y)(x + 2y)
Answer5(x − 2y)(x + 2y)
