The question, in short

A sequence has nth term an² + bn − 4, with first term −3 and second term 2. Find the values of a and b.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 5 marks

  1. 1n = 1: a × 1² + b × 1 − 4 = −3, so a + b = 1
  2. 2n = 2: a × 2² + b × 2 − 4 = 2, so 4a + 2b = 6, i.e. 2a + b = 3
  3. 3Subtract: (2a + b) − (a + b) = 3 − 1, so a = 2
  4. 4b = 1 − 2 = −1
  5. 5a = 2, b = −1

Answera = 2, b = −1
