The question, in short

Factorise two algebraic expressions: a difference of two squares, and an expression with a repeated bracket factor.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 1 mark

Factorise x² − 64.

  1. 1x² − 64 = x² − 8² (difference of two squares)
  2. 2= (x + 8)(x − 8)

Answer(x + 8)(x − 8)

Part (b) · 2 marks

Factorise 5x(x − 2y) + 6(x − 2y)².

  1. 1Common factor (x − 2y): (x − 2y)(5x + 6(x − 2y))
  2. 2= (x − 2y)(5x + 6x − 12y) = (x − 2y)(11x − 12y)

Answer(x − 2y)(11x − 12y)
