The question, in short

Vectors x and y run from O to A and O to B; D lies on AB with vector OD given as a combination of x and y. Find the ratio in which D divides AB.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 2 marks

  1. 1AD = OD − OA = 3/7 x + 4/7 y − x = −4/7 x + 4/7 y = 4/7(y − x)
  2. 2DB = OB − OD = y − 3/7 x − 4/7 y = −3/7 x + 3/7 y = 3/7(y − x)
  3. 3AD : DB = 4/7 : 3/7
  4. 4= 4 : 3
