The question, in short

Family flight costs from Shanghai to Auckland, plus a stopover in Sydney: work out flight times, distance, average speed, and holiday expense totals.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 3 marks

Adult flight costs $630; child fare is 5/8 of adult. For 2 adults and 3 children, show total is $2441 to nearest dollar.

  1. 1Child cost = 5/8 × 630 = $393.75
  2. 2Total = 2 × 630 + 3 × 393.75 = 1260 + 1181.25
  3. 3= $2441.25 = $2441 to the nearest dollar

Answer2 × 630 + 3 × 5/8 × 630 = 2441.25

Part (bi) · 3 marks

Departure 20 05 on 13th November, 2 h 30 min stop in Sydney, arrival 17 25 on 14th November, Auckland 5 hours ahead. Find flying time.

  1. 1Leaves 20 05 Shanghai time = 01 05 Auckland time on 14th November
  2. 2Journey time = 01 05 to 17 25 = 16 h 20 min
  3. 3Flying time = 16 h 20 min − 2 h 30 min = 13 h 50 min

Answer13 h 50 min

Part (bii) · 1 mark

Convert the flying time from part (b)(i) to hours, correct to 3 decimal places.

  1. 150 min = 50/60 h = 0.8333… h
  2. 213 h 50 min = 13.833 h

Answer13.833

Part (biii) · 1 mark

Add the Shanghai to Sydney distance 7882 km and Sydney to Auckland distance 2156 km to find total distance flown.

  1. 17882 + 2156 = 10038 km

Answer10038

Part (biv) · 2 marks

Using the total distance and the flying time, calculate the plane's average speed while flying.

  1. 1Leaves 20 05 Shanghai time = 01 05 Auckland time on 14th.
  2. 201 05 to 17 25 is 16 h 20 min.
  3. 3Flying time = 16 h 20 min − 2 h 30 min = 13 h 50 min = 13.833… h.
  4. 4Speed = distance ÷ time = 10038 ÷ 13.833… = 725.6… ≈ 726 km/h

Answer726 or 725.6 to 725.7

Part (c) · 2 marks

Hotel : car hire : food = 8 : 5 : 6 and hotel costs $2400. Show the total holiday expenses are $5700.

  1. 18 parts = $2400, so 1 part = 2400 ÷ 8 = $300
  2. 2Total parts = 8 + 5 + 6 = 19
  3. 3Total = 300 × 19 = $5700

Answer2400 ÷ 8 × (8 + 5 + 6) = 5700
