The question, in short
Using the right-angled triangle ABD with AD = 21.2 m and AB = 16.5 m, find the flagpole height BD, then use angle BCD = 48° to find rope CD.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 3 marks
Show that the height BD of the flagpole is 13.3 m, correct to 1 decimal place.
- 1BD² + 16.5² = 21.2²
- 2BD² = 449.44 − 272.25 = 177.19
- 3BD = √177.19 = 13.31… = 13.3 m (1 d.p.)
Answer√(21.2² − 16.5²) = 13.31…
Part (b) · 3 marks
Calculate the length of the rope CD.
- 1sin 48° = 13.3/CD
- 2CD = 13.3 ÷ sin 48°
- 3= 17.89… ≈ 17.9 m
Answer17.9 or 17.89 to 17.91…
