The question, in short
Solve the pair of simultaneous equations 4x − 5y = 13 and 3x − 2y = 8, giving the values of x and y.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 4 marks
- 14x − 5y = 13 (× 2): 8x − 10y = 26
- 23x − 2y = 8 (× 5): 15x − 10y = 40
- 3Subtract: 7x = 14, so x = 2
- 43(2) − 2y = 8, so −2y = 2, y = −1
- 5x = 2, y = −1
Answerx = 2, y = −1
