The question, in short

A metal cube has mass 14.2 g to 1 d.p.; find the lower bound of the mass, then use side length 1.3 cm to 1 d.p. to find the upper bound of the density.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 1 mark

Find the lower bound of the mass, given 14.2 g correct to 1 decimal place.

  1. 1Mass to 1 d.p.: half of 0.1 is 0.05
  2. 2Lower bound = 14.2 − 0.05 = 14.15 g

Answer14.15

Part (b) · 3 marks

With side length 1.3 cm correct to 1 d.p., calculate the upper bound of the density using mass ÷ volume.

  1. 1Upper bound density = upper bound mass ÷ lower bound volume
  2. 2Upper bound mass = 14.25 g, lower bound side = 1.25 cm
  3. 3Density = 14.25 ÷ 1.25³ = 14.25 ÷ 1.953125
  4. 4= 7.296 g/cm³
